Manufacturing plant floor with a production line and robotic cell, the OT environment ForgeSOC monitors

Manufacturing

OT security monitoring for manufacturing

A stopped line costs more than any alert ever will. ForgeSOC reads the alerts from the OT platform you already own, on every shift, and escalates what matters.

01 / The environment

What a plant floor OT network contains

A modern plant is a stack of control systems. PLCs run each line. Robotics cells talk to their own controllers. HMIs sit at stations across the floor. Engineering workstations hold the programs, and integrators connect in to support equipment they installed.

Above all of that sits the MES boundary, where production data moves up to business systems. That boundary is where ICS monitoring for manufacturing earns its keep, because it is where IT and OT traffic meet.

02 / The risk

Downtime is the real cost

In manufacturing the question is not data loss first. It is whether the line runs. A compromised engineering workstation, a rogue device on a cell network or a change to a PLC program can stop production or ruin a run.

Your OT security platform can see those events. But a plant that runs several shifts produces events at all hours, and the people who understand them are on the floor doing something else.

  • Unexpected devices appearing on a line network.
  • Engineering workstations talking to controllers outside a maintenance window.
  • Vendor remote sessions at odd hours.
  • New connections across the MES boundary.

03 / The gap

Plants run more hours than security teams do

Many plants run second and third shift, and weekends in busy seasons. The OT or IT security team usually works days. Between the platform alerting and a human reading the alert, hours can pass.

A plant floor OT SOC closes that window. ForgeSOC analysts read alerts while your team is off, apply asset and network context, and escalate the ones that need a person.

04 / What we do

What the analysts handle

Everything runs read-only inside the platform you already own.

  • 01Validate alerts and suppress duplicates so cell and line noise does not bury real events.
  • 02Check each alert against asset, network and event context for the affected line.
  • 03Assign severity and give your team the reason for escalation.
  • 04Open tickets, notify your contacts and follow up until handoff.
  • 05Watch sensor and integration health so a dark network segment is noticed.
  • 06Deliver monthly reports and a quarterly asset true-up.

05 / Escalation

Escalation that respects the production schedule

During onboarding we map who to call for which line and when, and we write runbooks that reflect how your plant runs. A finding on a robotics cell does not go to the same person as one on the packaging line.

Confirmed findings go to US-based OT specialists, who work with your contacts. Response decisions stay with you, because only you know what a line stop costs on a given day.

06 / Boundaries

What this is not

We do not deploy, upgrade or administer your platform. We do not do detection engineering, forensics or incident response. If your platform is noisy because it was never tuned, we can scope a readiness project so monitoring starts from a clean baseline.

07 / Getting started

What the first conversation covers

Onboarding starts with access. We connect read-only through your existing secure remote access, and we recommend one if you do not have it. Then we review your platform with you: which cells and lines it sees, which alerts fire most, and which assets matter most to production.

From there we build the contact tree and runbooks around your plants, run a baseline review of current alerts, and send a test escalation so everyone knows the path works before monitoring begins. Each plant gets its own entries, because a stamping plant and an assembly plant do not share the same people or the same worry.

Plants with a mix of old and new equipment are normal. Legacy controllers that cannot be patched are part of the picture, not an excuse to skip monitoring. Watching the network around them is often the only control available.

08 / FAQ

Manufacturing questions

01Will you touch our PLCs or lines?

No. Access is read-only and goes through your secure remote access platform or a hardened jump host.

02We have several plants. Can you cover them?

Yes, within our target of one to ten sites. We map escalation contacts per site.

03Can we cover only the shifts we do not staff?

Yes. Nights and weekends, or a single shift, are available alongside full 24/7/365 coverage.

04Do you need our MES data?

No. We work from what your OT security platform already collects.
