OT monitoring for water utilities

Your SCADA never sleeps, and your operators cannot watch every alert. ForgeSOC monitors the OT security platform you already own, so a quiet Sunday night still has someone looking.

01 / The environment

What a water utility OT network looks like

A typical water or wastewater system spreads control across a lot of ground. A treatment plant has PLCs running chemical feed, filtration and pumping, with HMIs on the plant floor and SCADA servers in the control room. Lift stations and remote pump sites report back over radio, cellular or leased lines. Many are unmanned.

Each of those links is a path into the control network. Vendor remote access, a laptop plugged in during maintenance, an HMI that was never patched. That is normal in a utility, and it is exactly what a passive OT security platform is built to watch.

The platform only helps if someone reads what it says.

02 / The staffing reality

Small staff, wide footprint, long hours

Most water systems do not have a security operations team. They have a handful of operators, a superintendent, and an IT person or a contractor who also runs the office network. The people who understand the process are not the people watching a security console.

Alerts arrive at all hours. A SCADA security monitoring alert at two in the morning goes to a phone, or to nobody. By Monday it is a stack of unread items, and nobody knows which one mattered.

  • Operators run the plant, not the alert queue.
  • IT staff rarely know what a normal PLC conversation looks like.
  • Remote sites generate traffic that looks odd until someone checks it against context.
  • Holidays and weekends are when coverage is thinnest.

03 / Why now

Risk assessments created the platform, not the watch

Many utilities bought passive monitoring after a risk assessment. Under the America's Water Infrastructure Act, community water systems assess risks to their systems, including cyber risk to control systems. That work often ends with a recommendation to get visibility into the OT network, and a purchase follows.

We make no claim that ForgeSOC makes you compliant with anything. What we do is simpler. We staff the monitoring so the platform you bought produces action instead of a dashboard no one opens.

04 / What we do

Wastewater OT security, watched and triaged

Our analysts work inside your platform with read-only access and handle the first hours of every alert.

  • 01Validate alerts and suppress duplicates so your operators see signal, not noise.
  • 02Review asset, network and event context across plant and remote sites.
  • 03Assign severity and write the escalation rationale in plain language.
  • 04Escalate confirmed findings to US-based OT specialists and to your contact tree.
  • 05Watch platform connectivity so a silent sensor at a lift station gets flagged.
  • 06Report monthly on alerts and escalations, and true up your asset list each quarter.

05 / Our delivery

A water utility SOC without hiring one

ForgeSOC is US-led. Our L1/L2 analysts work from a dedicated, secured SOC in the Philippines, which puts their working day in the US night. That is the stretch your own crew is least able to cover. Confirmed findings go to US-based OT specialists.

Access is read-only, through your secure remote access platform or a hardened jump host. We never write to a controller, change a setpoint or touch your process. Decisions about response stay with your team.

06 / Boundaries

What we do not do

We do not deploy or maintain your monitoring platform, tune detections at length, perform forensics, or carry out containment and recovery. If an alert turns out to be real, you decide what happens next. We can connect you with response partners. If your platform has never been tuned, we can scope a readiness project first.

07 / FAQ

Water utility questions

01We only have a few sites. Is that enough?

Yes. One to ten sites with a lean team is our target. Many utilities are one plant plus a set of remote stations.

02Can you watch remote pump sites and lift stations?

We watch what your platform sees. If sensors or integrations cover the remote sites, we monitor them and flag when they go quiet.

03Does this satisfy an AWIA requirement?

We do not claim compliance. We provide monitoring that can support the work you do under your risk assessment and response planning.

04Can we cover only nights and weekends?

Yes. Many utilities staff the day shift and need the rest covered.
